Karate Kids

So my son has taken an interest in Karate.  I must say that I enjoy it almost as much if not as much has he does.  The lessons of respect, focus, and listening are very plain and I keep having "why didn't I think to do that" moments while watching them do exercises.

My favorite so far is standing at attention for one minute.  The first time I watched my son stand there and swing his arms, look at me and stick his tongue out at me, and rub his eyes.  So we tried a few times at home.  We are talking now about what he should be thinking about while standing at attention.  I watched him try again earlier this week and he held it almost the full minute.  He tends to move his fingers which got him.

My daughter also seems to like Karate.  Now she screams when we are there, but I believe that is because she is not in there with her bubby.  Just a few more years, princess!

I like how they are very quick to recognize kids but not so quick that it becomes commonplace and less exciting.  When they arrive they get a white belt.  After 5 classes they get a blue stripe for listening, after which they can spar (hello 85.00 payment).  At 10 classes they earn a yellow stripe, at 15 classes a red stripe, and at 20 classes a black stripe.  At 30 classes they can "test" for their next belt, which at the mighty mites' age (that is what his class is called) is just showing up.  My son will receive his red stripe tomorrow so he is halfway to earning the white belt with a purple stripe (which is another 45.00).

So, bottom line, I think I have karate kids.  One now, and another very soon!

I am ready to spar mommy!

My Karate kid!
