Thursday, April 7, 2011 was just a traumatic day for my children.
It started out with me taking the day off to take Brandon to get his first cavity filling done. He was all excited about going back to the dentist because the last time he went they gave him neat toys.
We got there and the first thing they did was put the red numbing gel in his mouth. He didn't like the taste of it so they washed some out, saying it wasn't that big of a deal because of the laughing gas they were going to use to mellow him out a little.
They put the little laughing gas mask on him while he jabbered away. The dentist asked me if he talked this much all the time. Why yes, yes he does I said. The laughing gas did NOTHING to him. When it looked like it was starting to make him sleepy he got mad and became less cooperative, so they just took it off.
It was then time to give him the Novocain shot. He knew the shot was coming and fought for a while. Twice the dentist said we were just going to have to send him to the Clifton office where they could put him completely out, and I said no way. 1) I am not taking another day off of work for this, and 2) we already paid 93.00 and I am not paying another 100.00 because they don't want to deal with him so they are doing this. I held Brandon down and they got the shot done with him screaming. He said later it wasn't that bad because he is a big boy, so at least I know I didn't scar him for life by doing that!
The rest of the filling didn't go too terribly. He resisted a little getting the drilling and filling done. The worst was when they used the water. the assistant didn't have the suction in his mouth so he was gurgling and freaking out a bit. I wanted to scream at the girl to get the water out. Once it was done, he pouted for a while and said "mommy, I did NOT like that" even though he was given a bag of toys. I hope this is a lesson learned about oral hygiene.
Brandon after his filling...
The rest of the daytime hours were fairly nice. We went to the Dollar Tree to pick out a toy since he did so well. Then we went to frische's for lunch (his choice) and all was right with the world again. We went home and took a nap (YAY!) and then got ready for karate and picked Olivia up from day care to go to karate.
Meanwhile my husband went to the doctor because of a foot issue he has put off and now being in karate he wants it fixed. He had blood drawn at the appointment so he was able to sympathize with Brandon because they both had needles that day.
A while later we are at karate. Brandon is finishing up his class and Trevor is getting ready to go into his. Olivia was sitting on my lap and Trevor asks what Olivia did to her neck. I look and there was a lump the size of a golf ball on the side of her neck. A nurse who happened to be sitting next to us saw it, did a big shocked sigh and said get her to a hospital now. I called the pediatrician while I put her in her carseat (Trevor got Brandon) and they said bring her in. We were 1/4mile away so we got there quickly. I can't take the kids to the ER without calling the pediatrician first because my insurance will automatically deny the claim.
Olivia's lungs, ears, and throat looked okay so we brought her downstairs for bloodwork and x-rays. Trying to get bloodwork on an 18 month old is bad. Trying to get bloodwork a second time because the first vein blew on an 18 month old is AWFUL. Even my son couldn't handle it and started crying. If my daughter knew how to cuss, every word would have been coming out of that little mouth because she was livid.
All the blood work came back normal so it looks like it is a gland infection. She is not happy and neither is mommy, daddy, or bubby because it looks awful! Hopefully the antibiotic works.
Olivia's bump last night...
So by the end of the day yesterday, 3 out of 4 of us were stuck with needles at least once. 3 out of the 4 of us cost me some kind of medical copay. It is on days like that I am very thankful for my health insurance.
